A member of the Sioux Falls School District has died because of COVID-19 -related complications, according to her obituary.
Sharon Schuldt, 67, was an employee for the district’s child nutrition team and lost her fight with the deadly virus Monday night.
Schuldt’s death is the first coronavirus death to be reported with ties directly to the district, though it’s unclear how the virus was contracted. She worked at Sonia Sotomayor Elementary, and an email to parents from Principal Tracy Vik states Schuldt had been in the hospital for a few weeks.
“I wanted to let you know that our school experienced a sad loss of a staff member last evening,” the email from Vik states.
Schuldt started with the district in September 2016, and served part time as a lunchroom education assistant, district spokesperson DeeAnn Konrad said.
Konrad said grief counselors are always made available when the district loses a member of its school family.
The district is not granting the Argus Leader any interviews with coworkers to share what they remember about Schuldt during this time because the family has asked for privacy and officials are respecting their wishes, Konrad said.
“Every employee is valued and considered a member of our school district family,” the district said in a statement late Tuesday afternoon. “When we lose a staff member for any reason, we reflect on their contributions to the success of our students and remember them gratefully. We grieve with and for their family.”
