Some things just deserve repeating. And so it is with the announcement that Cape Henlopen School District Nutrition Services Supervisor Cheryle-Lord Gordon recently received statewide recognition for her and her team’s effort to keep district students fed after schools were shut down in March due to COVID-19.
Gordon led an effort to prepare and deliver, to several pickup locations throughout the district, 800 breakfasts and 800 lunches Monday through Friday. Her team included cafeteria workers, custodians, bus drivers and volunteers working together for the children. The effort was recognized by a First Chance Award presented by Delaware First Lady Tracey Quillen Carney and the End Childhood Hunger Task Force.
Like having clean air and water, a reliable source of healthy food is essential for all to thrive and have a fighting chance at being productive citizens who can ultimately feel the sense of accomplishment that comes from being contributing members of their communities. For children especially, healthy food is critical for physical and mental development and learning.
Without healthy food regularly available, Gordon, through her 29 years with the Cape district, would not have been able to progress from bus driver to cafeteria worker to cafeteria manager and ultimately to her current position as supervisor of Child Nutrition Services. It’s impossible to overestimate the fundamental value of healthy food to human success.
All Cape students are eligible for the breakfasts and lunches being prepared and delivered by Gordon and her team regardless of whether they’re now attending school in person, remotely or in a hybrid schedule. Program details and how to sign up are available at capehenlopenschools.com.
People often comment on the strong sense of community throughout our region. The combination of caring, cooperation, understanding and can-do attitude being displayed by the Cape district child nutrition team during this unprecedented pandemic is what will help us get through and come out stronger on the other side.
