GRANITE CITY — The Tri-City YMCA at 451 Niedringhaus Ave., Granite City, has announced that it is transitioning the Tri-City fitness center into a youth development center.
“Like many organizations, the Tri-City Y has experienced a significant loss of revenue due to COVID-19,” the group has announced. “We have conducted a careful financial analysis and determined we cannot continue to maintain our current operations without sustaining further substantial financial loss.”
The facility will stop offering health and fitness programs and services in Granite City on Dec. 31. Officials said they are working to secure positions at other locations for employees not working in child care.
According to Tri-City Y officials, the move from a fitness center to a youth development center in Granite City is designed to better serve the region’s growing child care needs. The facility plans to expand its youth development offerings through early childhood education, summer camp, Y Club before and after school care and other programs.
“Even though the Tri-City Y will no longer offer fitness services, we hope the Gateway Region YMCA will remain your destination for fitness and personal growth,” officials said. “As a courtesy, we will automatically transfer our memberships to our nearest Illinois facility — the Collinsville Maryville Troy YMCA — and membership rates will stay the same through March 31, 2021.”
Members wishing to choose an alternate facility or wanting to make changes to their membership are asked to contact the Tri-City YMCA at 618-236-9983.
