The city of Santa Maria Recreation and Parks Department is preparing to re-open the public fitness facilities at the Abel Maldonado Community Youth Center on Monday, Nov. 2.
The intent is to relocate the center’s fitness equipment into the more spacious Events Center inside the Maldonado Center, 600 S. McClelland St., where more social distancing space can be provided.
This will provide weekday morning hours for patrons using a reservation system, similar to the one in use at the adjacent Nelson Aquatics Center, said Dennis Smitherman, recreation services manager. There would be a $5 per person reservation fee to cover the cost of the reservation system.
“We want to get our facilities re-opened in a safe and orderly manner,” Smitherman said. “This move will provide opportunities for many of our longtime patrons to get back to their fitness routines.”
The Recreation and Park Department has made a number of adjustments to its operations to meet the safety guidelines included in the County Health Orders; virtual classes, drive-in events, extra cleaning of public playgrounds, and providing take home kits for families.
According to Smitherman, these steps ensure there is still safe and meaningful recreation opportunities offered to the community.
